The Medical Library’s Online Resources: Always On, Always Accessible

It’s nearly Independence Day, when we celebrate our freedom as a nation in the United States of America. We enjoy many freedoms in the USA, but we’re going to focus on what’s available for free (to you as a Lee Health employee) online through the Lee Health Medical Library.

First, any staff member can sign up for a free OpenAthens account which gives you remote access to all our subscribed online resources. Just go to our website [email protected], scroll down a bit, and click on “OpenAthens Registration” on the left side of our home page to submit a registration form. Once you have activated your account, you can log in at the top right of our home page to search dozens of resources and databases, including UpToDate, PubMed, Ovid Medline, JBI, and CINAHL.

Then, there’s our extensive eBook collection (again, paid for by Lee Health).  Just click on the link to the Book Catalog in the upper right corner of the library homepage and type your subject or title into the search box to begin exploring the library catalog. Why buy the book when you can get it online (It sure beats spending your hard-earned cash on it and lugging it around in your backpack!) Our eBook collection is updated in real time as we are notified of new additions to assure you the widest selection of titles on your preferred topics.

And that’s not all! With your OpenAthens account, you’ll have access to all the journals we subscribe to. You can search available journals by clicking on “eJournals” near the top of our home page above the “Ask a Librarian” chat request box. The available issues are listed below each journal’s description in the Publication Finder. You can also search our databases and subjects in the Publication Finder.

So, after you grill your hot dogs and eat your apple pie, and before you watch the fireworks, celebrate your freedom to access a world of resources remotely. It's all waiting for you online through the Medical Library!
